Woodworkers' Guild of Georgia Scholarship Program

Scholarship Awards

All current guild members (dues paid) are eligible to request a scholarship, one year after joining the Guild.  The member's one-year guild anniversary must occur on or before the date of the scholarship drawing.  All requests must be for woodworking related education.

Scholarships will be awarded twice each year. Request forms will be accepted during the months of January and July. Recipients will be selected at a drawing of all valid requests received during the previous month, at the regular Guild meetings in February and August. The number of scholarships given will be determined by the amount budgeted each year by the Board of Directors.

Each scholarship recipient will receive a check, made payable to the training facility, for 60% of the award amount prior to the training. If the recipient has already paid for the training course and can provide a copy of the receipt, the award check will be made payable directly to the guild member.

Within 90 days after completion of the training, the member will write an article for the guild's newsletter, highlighting what he/she has learned and giving a critique of the training received. In lieu of a written article, the member can elect to provide a presentation to the guild during a monthly meeting. A second check for the remaining 40%, made payable to the guild member, will be provided after submission of his/her article to the newsletter or when the presentation to the Guild has been completed.

Once a member has been awarded a scholarship, that member will not be eligible for future scholarships for 3 years from the date of the training. If the award recipient does not provide a written article or schedule a Guild presentation within 90 days of attending the class, he/she will not be eligible for any future scholarship drawing.

The amount of the scholarship will not exceed $300 and cannot exceed the actual cost of the training course. Each application must specify a woodworking course scheduled to occur during the 6 month period following scholarship drawing. Courses occurring outside that time frame would become part of the next scheduled scholarship drawing. One application per member per drawing.

If for any reason the award recipient is unable to attend the course described on his/her scholarship application form (due to course cancellation, rescheduling, full class, etc.), selection of an alternative training class will be subject to approval by the Board of Directors.

Example: Member submits a request for $300 to attend a $400 class at Bob's Woodworking School. The request is selected for an award. The Guild gives the recipient a check for $180 made payable to Bob's Woodworking School. The recipient takes the training and submits an article for the newsletter. A check for the remaining $120 of the award is given to the recipient. All requests must be submitted on the Scholarship Award Request Form. Applications may be mailed to the Guild P.O. Box or submitted at the monthly meeting PRIOR TO the month of the drawing. These Rules and the Request Form will be printed in the December and June newsletters. They will also be available at the Guild meetings and on the Guild website.
