Ted McWilliams' Shop By WALTER JARCK This is part of a series on some members shops, their arrangement, size, noteworthy ideas and innovations. These articles could serve as an excellent reference library for those setting up new shops or improving their present shops. Our plan is to write up several Guild members shops and then poll the membership to see if we should continue the series. So let us hear from you. This months report takes a different tack since we decided to see how a commercial shop might be equipped in contrast to the smaller "hobby shops" of our members. So we went and visited TCM Woodworking, owned by Guild and Board member Ted McWilliams. Ted is a very successful businessman and an excellent woodworker. He specializes in store decors and displays and his work is being used and admired in some of the better shops around Atlanta. He also makes up large orders of small displays for natural foods and vitamins for a national company. Teds shop shows the need to be very productive with efficient use of time and little or no wasted motion in his very competitive industry. His shop therefore exhibits excellent flow patterns. As many as 10 workers can operate in the shop without getting in each others way. The shop equipment includes:
While Ted has several very specialized pieces of equipment to satisfy his needs, he also has several pieces commonly found in our smaller, non-commercial shops. This always makes me feel good since if they perform well in high production usage they should last my lifetime at the usage I give. Ted can be reached at 404-636-8407 and is willing to take calls if he is not in the middle of a rush project. |
